Duisburg 1980s Revisited is a project that delves into the history of migration and right-wing violence in Duisburg and North Rhine-Westphalia. The project is carried out in close cooperation with various partners, including the "Initiative Duisburg 26 August 1984", the Documentation Center and Museum of Migration in Germany, and other institutions.
The aim of the project is to create a better understanding of the events and social developments in Germany during the 1980s and 1990s through an extensive web documentation. The web documentation presents a well-researched representation of the historical events surrounding the history of migration in the 1980s and 1990s, shedding light on both personal stories and social dynamics. Visitors have the opportunity to engage deeply with the complexity and significance of migration. The role of right-wing violence during the mentioned time periods is also examined.
In addition to the documentary work, the project strives for active collaboration with local communities. This includes fostering dialogue and exchange to collectively reflect on the past and discuss current challenges and opportunities for an inclusive society.
The "Initiative Duisburg 26 August 1984" is one of the project's cooperation partners. They are actively involved in shedding light on the circumstances of the arson attack on August 26, 1984, at the residential building on Wanheimer Straße 301. Together with those affected, the initiative works towards the recognition of the arson attack as racially motivated. The initiative has organized several events to facilitate dialogue and processing of the attack. They also participate in memorial events, expressions of solidarity, and anti-racist demonstrations.
Other important cooperation partners of the project are the Documentation Center and Museum of Migration in Germany, as well as other institutions. They contribute their expertise and support to make the web documentation comprehensive and informative.
Through collaboration with various actors from the region, the project also aims to build and maintain a strong network. This allows for exchange with people who are deeply engaged with the history of migration in Germany and promotes critical reflection on current conditions.
