Recent history, historiography, and memory culture in Germany are now undergoing a transformation. Cultural institutions, administrations, politics, and educational institutes are faced with the challenge of recognizing those who have not been remembered in the collective memory, which stories have remained unwritten, and what structural causes have led to these blind spots. This has become especially evident since the right-wing terrorist attacks in Hanau and Halle, the global Black Lives Matter protests following the death of George Floyd, and the unmasking of the right-wing terrorist group NSU, that institutional racism, right-wing violence, anti-Semitism, and discrimination are central issues in the societal debate on remembering the past and present for a democratic future. Survivors and relatives of victims of right-wing violence and people affected by racism have loudly accused the effects of institutional racism. They have also sparked a contentious but lively discussion on what a multidirectional memory culture and historiography should look like in a migration society, which can both reconstruct racist, anti-Semitic, and postcolonial continuities and make civil society resistance against them visible.
The project "Ein Anderes Duisburg. Remembering Migration – Creating Anti-Racist Cities" unites historical research, archiving, digital documentation, and civil society education and outreach work. It builds on the findings of decolonial, critical migration, racism, anti-Semitism, and postcolonial research and takes on the search for memory narratives and life stories of marginalized people from an intersectional perspective. The goal of the project is to establish a multidirectional memory culture in Duisburg that creates a space in the city's memory for diverse discriminated and racialized Duisburg citizens and offers the city society a public forum for their memories. This includes the creation of a web documentary, expanding the collections of the city archives, and establishing a cross-community civil society advisory board. The project is accompanied by a series of city discussions that aim to bring the discussion back into the city society. The Education Region works together with the Center for Memory Culture Duisburg and the Initiative Duisburg August 26, 1984, with funding from the Federal Agency for Civic Education.
