In a two-year program consisting of workshops, block parties, concerts, and mentoring, girls and women learn about the elements of hip hop together with established rappers and artists, write their own songs, and empower each other through rap and hip hop. The result is a music album that captures the diversity of Berlin.
“Female* Hip Hop Stories from Berlin” is a multigenerational hip hop project with girls* and women*. The program is modular, designed to run for two years, and consists of workshops, block parties, training courses, and concerts. The final music album captures the diversity of Berlin and the perspectives and voices of girls* and women* who help shape this city through sound, video, and poetry. It is being developed through a multi-voiced and collaborative process together with Berlin women* from different districts – from Spandau to Pankow to Neukölln – as well as in collaboration with established rappers*. The album, as well as other media created during the course of the project, will be presented at a final festival where newcomers* and professionals will stand together on stage and celebrate sisterhood. The core idea of hip hop, mutual support, is at the forefront. Musically, the album breaks new ground: it will experiment with a wide variety of musical styles within hip hop and beyond (such as a crossover track featuring the City West Music School).
