Death affects every person. And yet, it is pushed to the outskirts of our society by the longing for immortality. Death Spells is a German-Egyptian talk-cooking show where experts engage in conversation while preparing a funeral feast, which is then eaten with the audience.
In the international cooking talk show Death Spells, ancient Egyptian rituals and contemporary social media are examined. Together with Mena El Shazly, an experimental performance was developed that is inspired by popular TV cooking and talk shows.
The fear of being forgotten and the longing for immortality is not only reflected in the ubiquitous self-presentation on social media. It is also expressed in ancient Egypt. Our guests are experts on the topic of death and social media. The show takes place simultaneously in Mannheim and Cairo – the live audience and the live stream audience alternate between guests from the different locations.
